Satin Balls

Satin Balls are a go to recipe for owners of underweight working dogs, emaciated dogs coming into rescues, high energy dogs, dogs that need to be enticed to eat, etc.  Satin Balls were designed to put weight on a dog very quickly and are loaded with calories. While fast weight gain in addition to fast weight loss, is not healthy for the body, some dogs need a calorie boost to push them towards regaining healthy weight.

Satin Balls, coupled with feeding them a quality kibble, allows us to get them to and keep them at a healthy weight. Please keep in mind that if your dog has any allergies, or other medical conditions, you should seek the advice of a licensed veterinarian prior to implementing Satin Balls into your dog’s diet. Miniature Schnauzers are sensitive to the fat content and are prone to pancreatitis, so a veterinarian advice is truly recommended.

The first step that you’ll take once everything is procured is to mix all of the ingredients together. It’s not unlike the same process you may use to make a meatloaf. Don’t worry if the resultant mix doesn’t look pretty – your dog won’t really care what it looks like as long as it’s yummy.

Next, you will simply divide the mix into 10-quart freezer bags and freeze. When you are ready to dole one out to your four-legged friend, simply remove one of the bags from the freezer, roll it into a ball when thawed, and serve it up. Don’t cook the mixture once it’s thawed – it is meant to be given to your pooch raw.

The video will show how to make the recipe with just one pound of ground beef for people who have small dogs like Miniature Schnauzers. But the recipe here is portioned for medium to large dogs like Standard and Giant Schnauzers.

NOTE:

Perhaps the most important thing to bear in mind when it comes to prepping satin balls is that these should be strictly made for the purpose of helping a dog either gain or maintain a healthy weight. They should never, ever be considered a viable replacement for doggie treats. Doing so could cause your dog more harm than good in the long run.

Ingredients

1 large box Total cereal (about 12 cups cereal)

1 large box uncooked oatmeal (about 15 cups oats)

1 15oz jar wheat germ

10 packages Knox unflavored gelatin

Pinch of salt

1 1/4 cup flax seed oil

1 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses

10 raw eggs

10 lbs. cheap hamburger (high fat %)

For small dogs, use only 1/10th of each item.

Directions

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl in the order of the listed ingredients above. In this order it is not necessary to wash your hands in between ingredients.

The mixture can be formed into balls as the name suggests or into patties which may be easier to stack in the freezer. Each serving size depends on each individual dog; typically for medium to large dogs, normal meatball size is used. Place the balls/patties into bags and freeze them. Since they are served raw, thaw them individually when you are ready to serve them.

Your dog will LOVE these, and weight gain should be seen relatively quickly.  Ingredients may be cut in half for a smaller recipe.
