I have made dog food for my schnauzers for many years now! They are very healthy and have never had any problems. I add it to their kibble which is still a solid foundation for nutrients. They love it! Small dogs (10-15#) can have 1/3 cup of the meal added to their normal kibble in a 50/50 mixture. Larger dogs use the same formula of 50% meal and 50% kibble.
The recipe can be changed in several ways by adding sliced baby carrot, frozen green beans, and even a spoonful of pumpkin for additional gut health. Remember that mini schnauzers have a propensity for crystals in their urine that can damage their bladder. So be very careful in using carrots, broccoli, spinach or legumes (garbanzos, lentils, chickpeas) which have high struvite crystals counts and can cause a severe condition that causes a surgical emergrency.
6 cups water
1 pound ground turkey
2 cups brown rice (for dogs with bladder stone history, substitute white rice)
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
½ (16 ounce) package frozen broccoli, carrots and cauliflower combination
Possible substitutions for vegetables:
Frozen peas
Frozen Green beans
small bite size cubes of Sweet Potato
Place the water, ground turkey, rice, and herbs/spices into a large Dutch oven or covered pot. Stir until the ground turkey is broken up and evenly distributed throughout the mixture; bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the frozen vegetables, and cook for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Refrigerate until using.
