When it comes to foods, there are hundreds of brands from which to choose. There are proponents of grain food, and those who opt for grain-free. Then there are holistic brands and even all RAW diet. But we at SchnauzerLife.com have started an analysis of the ingredients of major brands and we only recommend brands with a solid source of quality control, ingredients which promote a healthy lifestyle, and a history of no recalls.
One of the brands we have started to follow and do tests is Farmina. Many holistic and organic pet food suppliers and supporters are in agreement that Farmina is an EXCELLENT brand because they are totally different in their thought process when they formulated the various flavors. Instead of offering a single focus like many manufacturers, they come out with grain-inclusive, grain free, organic, and prescription formulations. The biggest change is that they are held to EUROPEAN standards because they are made in ITALY. In Europe, each ingredient has to have a percentage of the total weight that specific ingredient is of the total weight. US Brands only list ingredients in order of weight, but are not required to report the ACTUAL percent. Additionally, they also have to list the percentage of total ANIMAL protein contained in the formula. This removes all guesswork when an ingredient panel only lists the total protein, which can be derived from grains, plants, and other additives instead of more costly animal sources. A higher animal protein formula is a more NATURAL source of energy and essential vitamins and amino acids rather than plant based formulas.
